“Revelstoke Railway Museum celebrates summer with Family Day!”
Revelstoke, BC -
Isn’t it time to visit the railway museum again? The museum is opening its doors for family fun with activities that have been favourites from past Railway Days festivals as well as to introduce some new exhibits and features.
Engage the senses in sounds and sights throughout the museum. Take in our newly acquired, last remaining, Canadian made, 1930s era, refrigerator car. Talk to the men who operated the wedge snow plow and give our diesel simulator a spin! Explore the story of the Chinese railway workers with "Writing on the Wall", an interactive outreach program from the Royal British Columbia Museum. Attend a captivating presentation, “Field to Kamloops: the Revelstoke Division” by Doug Mayer, at 11:00 a.m.
The Revelstoke Model Railway Club will be showcasing its model railroad layout with demonstrations for all ages to enjoy. Relax with a cup of coffee and a goodie in the business car. Enjoy a personal tour of one, or all, of our three galleries and in our rolling stock outside. Visit with our volunteer engineers in the steam locomotive and in our vintage diesel and see the difference that time and technology makes! The kids can make a craft and there is a scavenger hunt that requires the use of a unique station map that may be turned in for a special prize. Be sure to visit the Operation Lifesaver booth for games and giveaways as they support train safety education. Don’t miss demonstrations of an original velocipede in our back yard. Test your railroading skills by taking part in a unique obstacle course. Listen to the classic sounds of the Revelstoke Highlanders Pipe Band with members of the Shuswap Pipes & Drums as you enjoy a tasty bite to eat from the barbecue, hosted by the Special Olympics BC-Revelstoke.
As always, we offer informative and interactive exhibits including audio visual presentations and art and photograph displays. The kids caboose is a favourite place to play and there is lots to learn about the history and operations of the railway through the mountains and the people who make it happen. Be sure to check out our gift shop, which will be having a special sale, for a great selection of books (including vintage), posters, art work, and railway themed items.
Join us trackside on Saturday August 20, from 10:00 to 3:00 to enjoy all that we have to offer for Family Day! Arrive anytime as activities are ongoing. Admission is by donation. All proceeds from the event go towards the museum’s building painting fundraising campaign!
A major tourist attraction for the region, the Revelstoke Railway Museum is operated by the Revelstoke Heritage Railway Society, a local, non-profit organization. The year round museum presents the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Columbia Mountains, as well as the role the railway, and its workers, have played in building Canada as a nation. A large collection of artifacts, historical photographs, artwork, and full-size rolling stock are displayed, including a steam locomotive built for mountain work.
